Moore, colleagues celebrate health care reform anniversary

Leaders applaud progress, look forward to cost containment

April 10, 2008 ... Health care leaders from across the Commonwealth joined at the State House Thursday to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of health care reform in Massachusetts.

Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, the legislation’s chief architect, united with Senate President Therese Murray, D-Plymouth, Governor Deval Patrick, and Speaker Salvatore DiMasi, D-Boston, not only to praise the reform’s progress, but to remind stakeholders and colleagues that plenty of work remains to be done.

A key concern of late has been the rising cost of health care, which Sen. Moore and his colleagues will soon be addressing when S 2526 reaches the Senate floor for debate. The legislation aims to control health care costs by, among other things, promoting electronic medical records, expanding the primary care workforce, and mandating reporting of hospital acquired infections. In addition, the legislation would require public hearings when an insurer files a premium rate increase greater than 7 percent.

Health care reform has made great strides in enrolling over 340,000 residents in health insurance plans, 175,000 of whom have joined Commonwealth Care, the state’s subsidized plans for low-income residents.
