Moore announces SAFE grant funding
April 15, 2008 ... Each community in the Worcester & Norfolk District has been awarded funding to educate students about the fire and health hazards of smoking-related materials, according to Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge. The Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) Program was established in FY 1996 to provide students with the knowledge base to recognize the dangers of fire, including the fire hazards that smoking-related materials pose. “Given the tragic event that took place in Uxbridge this past summer, there is no question as to the necessity of this education,” said Moore. “I have been an ardent supporter of the S.A.F.E. Program because I believe it provides a real education and builds important relationships between students and their local firefighters.” The core of the S.A.F.E. Program has been and will continue to be school-based. Because learning occurs at all ages, and is not limited to pupils who attend school, as of FY06 S.A.F.E. funds can now be used to implement community fire and life safety education programs outside of school buildings. S.A.F.E. is implemented by firefighters who have special training in teaching fire and life safety education. Listed below are the total amounts of FY 2008 S.A.F.E. Grants for the communities of the Worcester and Norfolk District.
