June 9, 2008 ... For the fifteenth year, a large gathering of Portuguese-Americans gathered Saturday evening, June 7, in celebration of the Day of Portugal. Music, skits, dancers in traditional Portuguese costumes, and Portuguese food were featured during the evening’s events at the St. Mary of the Assumption Parish Center. Portuguese Consul-General Manuela Bairos, Senator Richard T. Moore, D – Uxbridge, Representative John Fernandes, D – Milford, and Milford Selectman William Buckley were among the honored guests at the celebration. “Milford area residents of Portuguese descent have made significant contributions to the improvement of our town, Commonwealth and nation,” Sen. Moore stated. “Known for their strong work ethic and family values, the Portuguese are an important part of the fabric of our community,” Moore explained, adding “and we honor them by observing an important theme of Portuguese heritage.” Day of Portugal, officially Dia de CamÕes, de CamÕes, de Portugal e das Comunidades Portuguesas (Day of CamÕes, Portugal and the Portuguese Communities), marks the date of Luis de CamÕes’ death on June 10, 1580, and is Portugal’s National Day. CamÕes wrote the Lusiads, Portugal’s national epic celebrating Portuguese history and achievements. |
