June 9, 2008 ... Sen. Richard T. Moore, D – Uxbridge, and Rep. Jennifer Callahan, D – Sutton, presented a resolution to the Massachusetts-New Hampshire Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America (MA-NH MGFA), recognizing their work as the only volunteer health clinic devoted to the research of Myasthenia Gravis (MG), a rare disease that causes weakness of the voluntary muscles and that can be fatal should proper care not be administered. The resolution, which was submitted by Sen. Moore and Rep. Callahan, cites the work and research that has been accomplished by the MA-NH MGFA, and asks the Massachusetts legislature, all elected and appointed officials, health care providers, interest groups and those afflicted by MG to promote awareness of MG, and to recognize the month of June as “Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month” within the Commonwealth. Besides citing the MA-NH MGFA for their hard work in researching MG, the resolution also calls attention to the fact that MG is regularly misdiagnosed and misunderstood. “It is important that we bring attention to the unfortunate disease Myasthenia Gravis in the month of June,” said Sen. Moore. “I was happy to have presented with Rep. Callahan, a resolution that recognizes the hard work accomplished by the Massachusetts-New Hampshire Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America. Their work has been absolutely essential in understanding a disease that is ignored and mistreated far too often.” “In 2006, Bob and Grace DeBoer of Sutton approached me to file and pass a resolution recognizing June as Myasthenia Gravis Awareness month. At that time, only one other state recognized the disease in such a way,” said Callahan. “Together, the Senator and I, have annually lead efforts in the Massachusetts Legislature with strong support from the DeBoer Family. More recently, thirteen states have proclaimed such a month and our mutual goal of raising awareness to ultimately lead to earlier detection and necessary therapeutic intervention continues to be a most worthy pursuit.” Members from the MA-NH MGFA were present to receive the resolution from Sen. Moore and Rep. Callahan in the Senate Chamber on Monday afternoon. |
