Moore presents Toxics Use Reduction Institute Award to Gentex Optics of Dudley

June 10, 2008 ... Sen. Richard T. Moore, D – Uxbridge, presented the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) Award to Gentex Optics of Dudley, for their hard work in reducing toxic chemicals within their company.

TURI Awards are given to businesses that honor the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Act of 1989 and that offer an environmentally-safe workplace, while also providing competition amongst other businesses. TURI operates out of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, and has recognized Gentex Optics for their efforts in making their business as environmentally friendly as possible.

Gentex first showed their environmental innovation in 1996, when they eliminated the use of Freon in their lens cleaning operation. Volatile Organic Compound emissions from this process were reduced by up to 90 percent through installation of bio-filtration. Additionally, the company has reduced water use by 34%, and this year, energy conservation has resulted in a 2.2 million kWh per year reduction. Employees have also entered a “Turn-It-Off” energy campaign that has resulted in employee awareness, pledges, and energy saving ideas for the manufacturing facility.
