Moore presents Toxics Use Reduction Institute Award to Silver Hanger Cleaners of Bellingham

June 10, 2008 ... Sen. Richard T. Moore, D – Uxbridge, presented the Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI) Award to Silver Hanger Cleaners of Bellingham, for their hard work in reducing toxic chemicals within their company.

TURI Awards are given to businesses that honor the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Act of 1989 and that offer an environmentally-safe workplace, while also providing competition amongst other businesses. TURI operates out of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, and has recognized Silver Hanger Cleaners for their efforts in making their business as environmentally friendly as possible.

Silver Hanger Cleaners has shown environmentally-friendly practices by converting their dry cleaning plant to wet cleaning technology to eliminate the use of perchloroethylene, a probable human carcinogen. Wet cleaning allows “dry-clean-only” clothes to be washed with water and detergents in computer controlled machines. Within a year, Silver Hanger Cleaners will host a demonstration to encourage Massachusetts cleaners to make the switch to wet cleaning, and to become environmentally conscious.
