Historic Blackstone Viaduct Bridge open for drivers and pedestrians again
September 23, 2008...When visitors to the Blackstone Valley travel along the beautiful roads and trails that weave throughout the landscape, they are often greeted by the Blackstone Viaduct Bridge, which is listed on the Register of National Historic Places. The viaduct, which is located on Farnum Street near the intersection of Canal and Mill Streets, has been reopened for access, according to Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge. The Viaduct Bridge, which was built in 1872 by the Boston, Hartford, and Erie Railroad along with the American Bridge Company, has served as a focal point for visitors traveling along Farnum Street in the Town of Blackstone. In recent years, the bridge had become extremely unstable, and was beginning to drop debris on the roadway below. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), recognizing the historic nature of the bridge, took action in making sure that any further decomposition of the bridge would be prevented. Recently, DCR completed the removal of loose blocks and the installation of mesh netting to prevent any further debris from falling onto the roadway below. "DCR is very happy to have been able to secure and reopen this historic bridge," said DCR Commissioner Richard K. Sullivan Jr. "It is, indeed, a beautiful and valuable structure." "I look forward to the day when this bridge is completely refurbished to its original splendor," said Sen. Moore. "With the expansive Blackstone Valley River Bikeway underway, this bridge will eventually serve as one of the major highlights of the route. I commend DCR for their cooperation and hard work in making sure that this historic site remains a destination for visitors in the years to come, especially when the Bikeway is complete." The Farnum Street Viaduct Bridge's initial repairs began on the 30th of August, and were completed on the 13th of September. Vehicle and pedestrian access has once again been granted, and complete refurbishment looks to be completed in the near future. For more information on Sen.
