Sen. Moore seeking votes, but for someone else

Lawmaker urges support for "CNN Super Hero"

October 30, 2008...Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, is running unopposed for re-election on November 4th, but that hasn't stopped him from seeking votes. Votes he is seeking however are for Liz McCartney, one of CNN's "Super Heroes," to be named "Super Hero of the Year." CNN initiated the project as an opportunity to recognize United States citizens that have shown exemplary service to their country through community service, educating, or simply doing good for the world.

McCartney has been nominated by CNN for her work in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina's catastrophic damage left thousands of people homeless. In February of 2006, McCartney decided to trek 1,000 miles from her home in Washington down to New Orleans to help with the cleanup and rebuilding of the areas that have been affected. Her experience with volunteering was so moving, that she decided to quit her job and move to New Orleans to completely devote her time to rebuilding the devastated areas.

Within two months of her move down to New Orleans, Liz and her boyfriend Zack Rosenburg began the St. Bernard Project, which focuses on helping those they consider most in need after Katrina: senior citizens and families with children. Liz's outlook has been simple as the leader of the Project: with donations, volunteers and skilled supervisors, homes will be rebuilt, allowing people to move back to their residencies. McCartney and her boyfriend have vowed to stay with the St. Bernard Project-which is named after a community in east New Orleans-until all the homes in the district are rebuilt. To date, the Project has recruited over 6,000 volunteers, which has allowed more than 120 families to move back into their homes.

Sen. Moore hasn't met Ms. McCartney, but went to Hopedale High School with her mother, Marion Farrell McCartney. The connection doesn't end there however, as the Senator's third grade teacher at Park Street School was Ms. McCartney's grandmother, the late M. Cecelia Farrell, a long time teacher in the Hopedale Public Schools system.
