Moore Encourages Residents to Participate in the 63rd Citizens’ Legislative Seminar

January 23, 2009... For more than 30 years in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the Citizens’ Legislative Seminar (CLS) has served as a valuable forum for residents to learn and understand about the intricacies of the Massachusetts Legislature and Massachusetts’s governmental processes. CLS was established in 1976 through a joint effort of the Massachusetts State Senate and the University of Massachusetts. Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, who is a perennial speaker for the event, is now encouraging his constituents to apply, if interested.

“The Citizens’ Legislative Seminar is a unique opportunity to find out and discover the role of a Legislator, and the significant work that is realized by the Massachusetts Legislature,” said Sen. Moore. “I always enjoy participating in this respected seminar, as education of our state government and lawmaking procedures is indispensable for residents of the Commonwealth.”

Today, Senate President Therese Murray, D-Plymouth, and Speaker of the House Salvatore F. DiMasi, D-Boston, have entrusted the Legislative Education Office with the design and the administration of the program. Participants in the seminar are nominated by their State Senator or Representative and are selected from a wide variety of fields, representing both the public and private sectors. Participants then gather in the Senate Reception Room to examine the legislative process, for multiple meetings over the course of one month’s time.

Sessions commence with a presentation to the group given by two faculty members, usually a Senator and a Representative, on the topic of the day. A simulated Legislative hearing and simulated Legislative session are also conducted. All comments are "off the record" since honest, candid consideration of the issues, in an atmosphere of mutual trust, is an important objective of the program.

Interested parties must contact Sen. Moore on a first-come, first-serve basis, as spots are limited for the event. The seminars for this year will be held on Wednesday mornings, on March 18, and 25, and April 1, 8, and 15. All considerations must be submitted by January 28, so make sure to contact Sen. Moore as soon as possible!

If constituents of Sen. Moore are interested in attending the Citizens’ Legislative Seminar, they may contact Jared Cain in his State House office at 617-722-1420, or may e mail him at Jared.Cain@state.ma.us
