Sen. Moore Encourages High School Students to Apply for Best Buy Children’s Foundation Scholarships

January 27, 2009...In response to the uncertain economic times we now live in, and the unfortunate burden this may place upon our high school graduates, Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, would like to announce that the Best Buy Children’s Foundation is now accepting applications for scholarships until February 15. The scholarship is available to students in grades 9-12, who will enter college upon high school graduation.

“With rising tuition costs and turbulent economic times, our graduating children face an unpredictable financial future today,” remarked Sen. Moore. “Best Buy Children’s Foundation Scholarships offer an invaluable opportunity for future college students to receive some financial support, and I encourage all of my high school constituents to consider applying if they are furthering their education.”

The scholarship program, which previously focused on graduating high school seniors, is now broadened to include 9-12 grade students to better align with the Foundation’s focus on “@15,” which is focused on opportunities to help teens thrive in their learning environment.

This year, the @15 program will award scholarships to students in grades 9-12, living in the U.S. or Puerto Rico, who plan to enter a full-time undergraduate course of study upon high school graduation. A total of 1,000 students will each receive a $1,500 scholarship, which adds up to a total of $1.5 million. Best Buy's scholarship program has awarded nearly $13 million since 1999 to more than 10,000 students to help them prepare for a bright future.

Scholarship recipients are selected based on community service and academic achievement and must be entering an accredited U.S. university, college or technical school in the fall immediately after graduation. Progress of recipients in grades 9-11 will be tracked by the program administrator, Scholarship America, and awards are provided upon high school graduation and enrollment in post-secondary education.

If you are interested in applying, applications may be submitted online at www.BestBuy.com/scholarships. The deadline for application submission is February 15, 2009, and there are no extensions.

The Best Buy Scholarships are a program of the Best Buy Children’s Foundation and are administered by Scholarship America. Recipients will be notified by Scholarship America in May 2009, and their names will also be posted on www.BestBuy.com/scholarships
