February 11, 2009...Recently, Governor Deval Patrick submitted his budget proposal to the Legislature for the budget year that begins next July 1. Despite his having cut the current budget by about $1 billion last fall and another $1 billion this month, the state faces a budget gap of more than $3.1 billion. In other words, the taxes and other revenues the Commonwealth is expected to receive will fall short of the anticipated cost of maintaining current services by that amount.

Moore has advocated for state and charitable funding to support at-risk youth, especially through programs such as the Webster-Dudley Boys and Girls Club. Moore, D-Uxbridge, was delighted to hear of an environmental program entitled “HERO-CM,” which is currently being offered at his alma mater. HERO is Clark University’s undergraduate and graduate “Human-Environment Regional Observatory-Central Massachusetts” program, and offers in-depth course work with human or environmental geography, landscape ecology, land-use planning, statistics and remote-sensing.
