Sen. Moore to address future legislators
March 31, 2009 ... Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, will be among the state leaders addressing high school students from across Massachusetts participating in the annual gathering of Student Government Day. Sen. Moore is an alumnus of the program as are several other legislators and legislative staffers. “Some of the students who visit the State House on Friday will, some day, represent their communities for real, as state legislators or even as Governor,” Sen. Moore noted. “I hope all of those attending will at least become informed, active citizens,” he added. “One of the events that got me interested in public service was representing Hopedale High School at Massachusetts Student Government Day in 1961,” Sen. Moore explained. “I fell in love with the State House and, inspired by President John F. Kennedy, with the idea of public service,” he added. “The rest, as they say, is history.” About 400 high school juniors and seniors get a taste of state government on Friday, debating bills and (unofficially) filling in for elected officials. They will hold a hearing on bills that raise the compulsory school attendance age to 18 and regulate the use of cell phones for student drivers. A joint convention of the faux House and Senate in the House chamber is scheduled for 10:45 am, where Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester will deliver welcoming remarks. He’ll be followed by Gov. Deval Patrick, Education Secretary Paul Reville, House Speaker Robert DeLeo, D-Winthrop, Sen. Moore, and Rep. Martha Walz, D-Boston. The student “governor,” Denise Gates of Agawam High School, will then deliver her address to the two chambers. Treasurer Timothy Cahill will speak to students at 12:30 pm in the Senate Reading Room. Representing the schools in Sen. Moore’s Worcester and Norfolk Senatorial District are: • Bartlett Junior-Senior High School • Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School • Bellingham High School • Blackstone Valley Regional Vocational Technical High School • Blackstone-Millville Regional High School • Hopedale Jr./Senior High School • Milford High School • Nipmuc Regional High School • Northbridge High School • Oxford High School • Shepherd Hill Regional High School • Sutton High School • Uxbridge High School |
