Sen. Moore, area Legislators thanked for new Uxbridge Fire apparatus

October 31, 2009 ... While the devastating fire that destroyed the Bernat Mill Complex in downtown Uxbridge two years ago was a tragedy for the community and many small businesses, there was a silver-lining of sorts from the event. As a result of the prompt action of Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, aided by State Representatives Paul Kujawksi, D-Webster, and Jennifer Callahan, D-Sutton, state relief funds were appropriated to compensate Uxbridge and area towns for their time and equipment to fight the fire, and to help Uxbridge replace two aging fire trucks.

State funds were used to purchase a new pumper for about $350,000 and federal funds, secured with the help of Congressman Richard E. Neal, MA-2, helped the town obtain over $200,000 for a new tanker truck. Both grants did not require any local match - a well-received assist from the state during these tough economic times.

Recently, the Uxbridge Fire Department held an open house and dedication ceremony for the new trucks to publicly thank the legislators for their help in responding to the fire and in obtaining the new apparatus. Selectman Chairman Michael Potaski, a frequent critic of state government, nevertheless expressed his appreciation for the legislators who responded effectively to the town's crisis.
