Update: DHCD Water Conservation Sustainability Program grant awarded to Oxford, Sutton and Dudley

January 28, 2010 ... Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, was joined recently by Rep. Geraldo Alicea, D-Charlton, Rep. Paul K. Frost, R-Auburn, Rep. Paul Kujawski, D-Webster, and Rep. Jennifer Callahan, D-Sutton, in announcing that the Oxford Housing Authority will be receiving $32,667.92 for the procurement of 90 toilets and showerheads, and the Sutton Housing Authority $3,541.74 for 11 toilets and showerheads, as part of the Department of Housing and Community Development’s (DHCD) Water Conservation/Low Flow Toilet Procurement project.  Additionally, the town of Dudley will now be receiving $31,213 for the procurement of 60 toilet and shower heads. The program’s goal is to enhance local drinking water and conservation efforts in communities across the Commonwealth.

“This grant will not only improve efficiency and conservation in the Towns of Oxford, Sutton and Dudley, but will enhance environmental protection in the area,” said Sen. Moore. “I applaud the Administration in selecting Oxford, Sutton and Dudley for these important infrastructure modernizations, and I look forward to the future benefits of these new installations.”

The Water Conservation Grant Program awards funds to municipalities and public water systems to encourage and enhance local drinking water conservation efforts. Federal and/or state funds provide monies for this grant program in support of the Massachusetts Water Resources Commission and the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection’s watershed management policies and water conservation initiatives, as well as the Massachusetts Water Policy developed through the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

The Oxford, Sutton and Dudley Housing Authorities were joined by other municipalities in applying for the procurement grant, and they will have by June 30, 2010 to install the new toilets and showerheads in housing units. The installations are modernized apparatus that will conserve water, save energy, and ultimately save money. Up to $60,000 is available for communities that apply, and nearly $400,000 is being awarded to municipalities that have joined Oxford, Sutton and Dudley in receiving the funds.
