Sen. Moore secures design plan for Route 146 improvements

Plan offers temporary relief until future flyover project

June 10, 2010 ... After closely working with Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray and Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) officials and staff, Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, recently announced that the intersection of Route 146 and Boston Road on the Sutton/Millbury line will be receiving around $6 million for turning lanes and traffic signals.

“Building on previous and ongoing improvements along Route 146 in the Sutton area, this new design proposal for the Boston Road intersection will enhance not only the flow of traffic along the roadway, but the safety and well being of motorists in the area,” said Sen. Moore. “As a daily commuter that consistently witnesses traffic disruption in the area, I applaud the administration for advancing this project and am happy to have played a key role in securing this important upgrade in public infrastructure.”

Sen. Moore has been a staunch advocate and supporter of enhancing safety on Route 146—once a focal point of high accident rates in the Commonwealth. Under the administrations of former Governors Edward King and Michael Dukakis, Sen. Moore was instrumental in expanding the roadway to four lanes, in place of its original two lane system. The recent Route 146 exchange with the Massachusetts Turnpike was also an important development supported by Sen. Moore, who cited the economic boon the connection would bring to the area.

The current design that has been proposed for the Boston Road/Route 146 intersection addresses long-standing traffic congestion that has beleaguered motorists for years. In adding traffic lanes and signalization at the crossing, Sen. Moore has noted that this proposal will offer some relief until a future Boston Road flyover project is realized.

The initial design that has been proposed, calls for a $6 million project that will be put out to bid in 2012. In addition to this design project, a $7 million resurfacing project, also secured by Sen. Moore, is currently underway on Route 146.
