Observing Clara Barton's Birthday

January 3, 2011 ... Clara Barton, "angel of the battlefield" during the Civil War and founder of the American Red Cross, was born 190 years ago on December 25, 1821. Massachusetts officially observes the week from December 25 through December 31 as "Clara Barton Days."

This year, the annual open house at the Clara Barton Birthplace Museum on Clara Barton Road in Oxford included an American Red Cross Blood drive and an Oxford Lions Club “Sightmobile” screening hosted by the Barton Diabetes Education Center. Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, a Trustee of the Barton Center and of the Central Massachusetts Chapter of the American Red Cross, dropped by the open house on Sunday, January 2nd. Senator Moore is also the principal legislative sponsor of the bill the established "Clara Barton Days."
