December 27, 2011 ... State Treasurer Steven Grossman, along with Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, presented a “Welcome Home Veterans Bonus” check in the amount of $1,000 to 1st Lieutenant Timothy J. Harvey, USMC, for his service in Afghanistan. The check presentation ceremony was arranged by Sen. Moore to help make more Massachusetts veterans aware of the bonus program.

December 21, 2011 ... Testifying this week before the state's Economic Assistance Coordinating Council (EACC), Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, advocated for two local projects that promise to add over two hundred jobs in the region and retain an addition 675 jobs. The projects will also result in new tax revenues for the state and the towns of Oxford and Douglas.

Local residents join Sen. Moore in celebrating Clara Barton Day

December 21, 2011 ... Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, honored Clara Barton's accomplishments recently at the State House with a performance by Nichols College history professor Emily Thomas, who provided a riveting portrayal of Dr. Mary Walker. Like Clara Barton, Dr. Walker volunteered during the Civil War serving the Union Army first as a nurse, then as a surgeon. For her efforts, she was awarded the distinguished Medal of Honor.

Senator Moore's efforts to curb drowsy driving supported by new research

December 21, 2011 ... In an instant, a drowsy driver took the life of Major Robert Raneri, an officer who many thought was destined to be a general in the Army Reserve, an officer who, as a Captain, commanded the 94th Military Police Company for 5 years, culminating in a 9-month deployment to Bosnia, an officer who, when he returned from that deployment, was determined to commit his life to serving his country. He was killed on his way to work at Ft. Devens where he was serving as the Provost Marshal and Acting Director of Plans and Training at Devens Reserve Forces Training Area by a 19-year old man who admittedly was awake for over 24 hours. Major Raneri's family was from the Milford area.

December 20, 2011 ... When we ring in the New Year at the stroke of midnight on December 31st, our personal economic outlook will brighten a bit more than in recent years! Massachusetts residents will keep a little more of their hard-earned money since the state income tax rate will drop from 5.3% to 5.25%. State government will take in about $114 million less in income tax receipts in 2012.

States introduced a record 1,607 immigration related bills and resolutions in 2011

December 20, 2011 ... In a newly released study on the state immigration laws, the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), reports in 2011 state legislators from across the country introduced 1,607 bills and resolutions relating to immigrants and refugees. This is a significant increase from 2010, when 46 states considered more than 1,400 bills and resolutions pertaining to immigrants. As of Dec. 7, 2011, 42 states and Puerto Rico had enacted 197 new laws and 109 new resolutions, for a total of 306.

Sen. Moore gains national support in fight to protect Milford, Bellingham from high cost EPA stormwater mandate

December 2, 2011 ... Federal and state legislators representing Bellingham, Franklin, and Milford, along with local officials of the three towns, have been fighting against a proposal by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), for the past two years to regulate storm water runoff. Specifically, while recognizing the importance of clean waterways, the officials are concerned about the timing and high cost of certain regulations that would have a direct and significant impact on town budgets and will substantially increase costs for businesses and residential developments. This very expensive new federal mandate will ultimately impact cities and towns throughout the United States.

We, The People adopted a Constitution in 1787 in order “to form a more perfect union.” The convention that met in Philadelphia had to bridge some yawning differences among regions of the new country, among social and economic classes, and among large and small states that, in some cases, were disputing ownership of the same territory. Some historians have suggested that it was a “miracle” that such divergent and strongly held viewpoints could find common ground, but they did.
