Statement from Senator Moore on the Oxford High School NJROTC being named a 2012 Distinguished Unit

June 7, 2012 ... “I am very proud to announce that the Oxford NJROTC was recently notified that Commander Joseph W. Hankins (Ret.), Naval Service Training Command and Area Four Manager selected Oxford NJROTC as a recipient 2012 Distinguished Unit (DU) Award – one of six DU’s presented to the 53 schools in the region encompassing the Northeast USA and Europe. Two of the six schools in Massachusetts received DU Awards. (Quabbin Regional is the other DU recipient.)

“Since it was created in 2000, Oxford High School students/cadets have earned an impressive 12 DU Awards in 13 years! I have had the honor of attending a number of Oxford NJROTC events over the years, and the students are always impressive. The Oxford NJROTC is a credit to Oxford and the Commonwealth!

“Attaining a DU Award is no easy task, despite the success that Oxford’s students have achieved. The simple math says if only 16 DU Awards are awarded, and there are 54 schools in Area Four, then 38 schools do not receive such a distinction. Oxford cadets know full well that the US Navy demands excellence, and expectations grow each year as does the pressure for all cadets to contribute as a group against pretty stiff criteria on at least 8-9 Excel spreadsheets that both the Area Manager and Headquarters use to evaluate all schools. 12 DU Awards in 13 years must certainly be a record number in Area Four.

“Congratulations to Commander Michael C. Masley, Jr. USN (Ret) and the Oxford NJROTC Cadets!”
