Statement from Senator Moore regarding Governor Patrick’s state budget decisions

July 9, 2012 ... Sen. Richard T. Moore, D-Uxbridge, issued the following statement in response to Gov. Deval Patrick’s decisions with regard to the Fiscal Year 2013 State Budget:

“The Governor’s decisions regarding two key issues in the FY 2013 State Budget send a mixed message to the public. While he has had a great deal to say about curbing the rising costs of health care, his words don’t seem to match his deeds. Given an opportunity to take meaningful action to curb the high cost of prescription drugs and medical devices, he failed to veto provisions that water down one of the strongest physician gift bans in the country, thus siding with the drug industry and upscale restaurants against the interest of consumers, especially senior citizens.

“However, the Governor deserves to be commended for upholding most of the common sense provisions to protect the public from those who routinely thwart the law and get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle without a license and have caused carnage on our roads. As the lead Senate sponsor of this bipartisan provision, I am pleased that he recognized the need for a serious response to those who ignore the law and place the public at grave risk. In this instance, he clearly acted in the public interest. One provision which would make it more difficult for an unlicensed person to register a vehicle was sent back with an amendment. We will certainly want to look at the Governor's proposed language to see if it still offers the same degree of protection for the public safety that our original language would have provided.”
