Massachusetts Senator Richard T. Moore
                                                January 2008
Dear Friend,

Since 1970, January has been recognized as National Blood Donor Month throughout the United States.   This is an important time for blood donations, considering that with a shelf life of only 42 days, blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months.  This is due to the busy schedule of regular blood donors, who are impacted by travel schedules, inclement weather, or illness.  Every day in the United States, approximately 39,000 units of blood are required in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer or other diseases.

In other words, the need for blood is constant, and volunteer blood donors contribute to nearly all the blood used for patient care in the United States.  This year alone, as many as five million patients wil require blood transfusions.  I encourage you to consider donating blood, or if you already do, I urge you to continue donating.  It is vital that blood is available to patients whenever and wherever it is needed because it is the blood on the shelves that can help save lives.  As you look to make your New Years Resolutions, you may considering donating blood at some point throughout 2008.  You may also want to consider some of the other options I've mentioned in my most recent Guest Commentary, "Some healthy ideas for your New Years' Resolutions".

I wish you and your family a healthy and happy new year, and hope you enjoy my January installment of "Moore from the Hill".  As my staff and I continue to search for ways to update you on my work on Beacon Hill and throughout the Worcester & Norfolk district, we certainly welcome your comments and suggestions.  As always, please do not hesitate to contact my office if we can be of assistance.

Sincerely,
RTM Signature
