The term “commonwealth,” is another word for “state.” Massachusetts, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Virginia all refer to themselves as “commonwealths.” Basically, it means that all the citizens of those states are supposed to work together for the good of all the people who are, after all, the foundation of government in a democracy.  So, next time someone asks where you're from, say "The Commonwealth of Massachusetts"!  The picture below is the official "seal" of the Commonwealth of Massachusetst.
